The idea of traveling from Denmark to Paris by bicycle came in 2001, when one of the employees of Rynkeby Foods received news from his doctor that he had lung problems. He wanted to do something about his health and get a better shape.
In 2002 he did this tour with 11 other cyclists and got sponsors to pay for food, etc. When they returned, they had collected over € 5,000 more and decided to give them to charity, to the Child Cancer Foundation .
From that moment the project turned into a charity project and grew year after year. Now, 15 years later, they made a donation of almost 6.5 million euros to the Child Cancer Foundation.
In 2016 there will be more than 1,400 cyclists to travel the long 1,250 km tour from Denmark to Paris, and again all the money raised will go to the foundation.
Today 4 out of 5 children can survive cancer. We want all children to survive, and the Foundation is working on this and also to support families who have children with cancer, with the help they need.
Every year a selection is made to get new cyclists to do the tour. For example, one of the managers of our Danish partner, Gislev Rejser, is about to cycle the 1,250 km tour in 2016.
The Hotel Columbia is a sponsor of this project, in order to support the good cause, and because together we can make a difference.
All cyclists from Denmark, Sweden and Norway will reach Paris on Saturday 17th July.
